Inner work

As we age, our lack of “inner work” becomes apparent in our interactions with people. Conversations with others are propelled by our weak egos. There is no room for exchange. Interactions that serve as conversations are merely about accomplishments, embellishments, or boasting; they are about the self, which serves the weak ego. There is no room or interest in inner work–the inner work that is challenging, and thus hard to do: heart work. This work allows us to break through denial and look at the truth. It is through the hard work on the self that we are more able to become authentic in all of our interactions. We are more able to live our truths.

If we choose not to focus on the inner work it becomes difficult to hide the starving ego, by which I mean the ego that is starved for attention. This ego doesn’t know how to listen to others. It is the ego that is merely self-centered. This self, both boring and outdated, is unwieldy and inflated. It is the ego that is sad–the one that was never nurtured and loved.

It is difficult to work on our inner selves, on our insecurities. This, however, is the most rewarding work of all. When we are secure in ourselves we are happy, loved and fulfilled.
